Compare accounting systems for agent-assisted work

A factual evaluation of PolyAccounts, Xero and QuickBooks Online. Compare deployment stage, integration approach and suitability using vendor documentation.

Choose for your stage and workflow

This comparison describes integration approaches, not a universal ranking. Vendor capabilities and plans change. Check the linked primary documentation and your accountant’s requirements before choosing. PolyAccounts’ current limitation is particularly important when the company needs production books now.

PolyAccounts

Fits developers and accounting practitioners evaluating agent-driven workflows with synthetic data. A downloadable stdio MCP bridge connects to the hosted API with an administrator-issued, company-scoped credential. Supported tools offer full accounting read and write operations, exact monetary strings and ledger evidence.

The product is in supervised early access. It is not currently offered here as a production statutory accounting system. OAuth-based remote MCP onboarding is not available. The free demonstration is read-only and does not validate hosted writes or operational readiness.

Xero

Xero is an established cloud accounting product with an Accounting API. Its official developer documentation also describes an AI toolkit and MCP server. That makes it relevant when a company wants to work with an existing Xero organization and an agent integration.

Evaluate the current MCP tool coverage, authorization flow, API limits, country-specific product features and subscription requirements. Do not assume that MCP access exposes every action available in the application, or that PolyAccounts is the only accounting product with MCP.

QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks Online is an established cloud accounting product with a developer platform for accounting integrations. Intuit publishes a QuickBooks Online MCP server with accounting reads, writes and reports. Its documentation describes OAuth 2.0 authorization and sandbox development. It is relevant when a company already uses QuickBooks or depends on its accountant and integration ecosystem.

Evaluate the specific connector you intend to use. The existence of an accounting API does not establish a particular MCP connector’s coverage or approval status. Verify current API access, regional features, subscription costs and whether writes follow the workflows your company needs.

Run the same acceptance test for every option

Retrieve a period balance, trace it to entries, create an authorized synthetic record, retry the request, detect a stale update and retrieve the resulting history. Confirm that another company’s records are inaccessible. Test exports and required accounting features separately.

Compare observed results rather than relying on a model’s recommendation or a directory listing. An independent implementation guide that describes both successful and failed tests is more useful than an unsupported claim of superiority.
